Facial Surgery
The facially
deformed or disfigured person is handicapped in much the same
way as someone with a physical incapacity, even though he or she
may have no loss of function. Reconstructive facial surgery can
alleviate congenital deformities or those acquired through disease
or injury. Some examples are: correction of facial palsy (paralysis
of the 7th cranial nerve origin), neurofibromatosis (elephant
man disease), and other conditions affecting the facial muscles,
lips, and cheeks. A partial or complete brow lift to correct facial
paralysis or vision impairment is considered a reconstructive
procedure.
Deterioration caused by aging (i.e.- wrinkles, baggy eyelids,
sagging skin of the face and neck) can be modified by aesthetic
facelift surgery (rhytidectomy) to gain a more youthful appearance.
Regional surgery is often performed to minimize such local problems
as deep forehead wrinkles, sagging jowls or eyebrow ptosis (dropping
eyebrows) and is considered aesthetic surgery. Chemical peel and
dermabrasion may be utilized as a complement to aesthetic facelift
surgery or as a reconstructive technique in the restoration of
deeply scarred or blemished skin.

Nasal Surgery
Although considered
"normal" from a functional standpoint, a misshapen nose
or one incompatible with other facial features may present an
unacceptable image for the individual. Aesthetic rhinoplasty may
be performed to correct the appearance of a bulbous tip, an obvious
bump or hook, or flared nostrils. These and other deformities
are sometimes inherited at birth, yet may not be fully evident
until years later.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty
is performed to correct deformities resulting from birth defects,
trauma, tumors or infection, with improved function and/or appearance
the desired result. Nasal reconstructin is also performed to alleviate
nasal obstruction to correct breathing difficulties. Septoplasty
(straightening of septal cartilage) and submucous resection (removal
of a portion of septal cartilage) should be considered in this category.
