Intensive outpatient
treatment for opiate addiction.
What
is opiate replacement therapy?
Opiate replacement therapy is a psychopharmacological approach to
the treatment of opiate dependency. The primary goal is the transformation
of persons who were once captured in the grasp of addiction into productive
members of society. This is accomplished through three distinct venues.
First, the chemical agents methadone and Orlaam, when administered
to opiate dependent persons, interrupt the cycle of addiction, which
varies from being sick (the withdrawal syndrome) to being normal to
being high. These chemical agents interrupt the cycle to keep the
client at a normal state. Second, the
medical staff continuously monitors the client to identify any medical
conditions which may have developed through the client's addictive
history or conditions which may manifest themselves during treatment.
The medical staff also educates clients on ways to avoid high risk
behaviors so they may avoid incurring unnecessary medical conditions.
Finally, the counseling staff helps clients develop a more productive
manner of handling life's difficulties. Clients are counseled on matters
such as AIDS-HIV prevention, relapse prevention, and other substance
abuse related issues. Clients are also provided vocational
and educational counseling when appropriate.
