| What
is laser skin resurfacing? |
Laser
skin resurfacing is performed by a physician using a high energy
pulsed carbon dioxide (CO2) laser. Applying
laser energy in quick, intense bursts, the physician can actually
vaporize unwanted tissue and smooth surface indentations - without
damaging the layers beneath and without significant risk of scaring.
In some cases, the procedure is used after a facelift or eyelid
surgery to eliminate remaining lines. In each case, the number and
duration of treatments vary depending on the specific condition
being treated.
Treatable conditions
with laser skin resurfacing:
| |
Facial
lines and wrinkles due to aging |
| |
Crows
feet at the corner of the eyes |
| |
Lines
and wrinkles under the eyes |
| |
Laugh
or frown creases |
| |
Lines
and wrinkles around the mouth |
| |
Scars
from acne, chicken pox, trauma or some surgeries |
Is the procedure painful?
Local anesthesia is usually
administered prior to treatment. During the procedure, patients
typically experience a moderate, continuous stinging sensation.
For longer procedures, an intravenous anesthetic may also be used.
What to expect after
treatment?
Following laser skin
resurfacing, patients generally experience swelling in the treated
area for up to two weeks and redness for a period of one to three
months. Certain precautions must be followed according to the physician's
advice to lessen the risk of infection.

Laser Treatment of Leg Veins |
Is it safe to remove
these veins?
Spider veins are small
blood vessels whose walls have lost their elasticity. They only
carry slow-moving deoxygenated blood and no longer serve a useful
function for the skin or other leg tissues. It is perfectly safe
to remove these vessels.
How does laser surgery
work on leg veins?
Laser light passes through
the skin and is selectively absorbed by the blood vessels. The light
produced by the laser generates heat within the vessel, rupturing
it without harming any surrounding tissue. Laser treatment can be
an effective alternative for removing even small, difficult-to-treat
vessels. Laser light treatment does not involve needles or require sutures.
Are there other ways
to treat leg veins?
"Sclerotherapy"
is a common form of treatment for leg veins. A hardening chemical
is injected by needle into the vessel to remove blood and close
the vein.

Are there side effects
from laser treatment?
Possible side effects,
which may vary by patient and type of laser used, include:
| |
Vascular
Lesions: |
|
- |
Temporary
blistering or crusting |
|
- |
Risk
of scaring |
|
- |
Temporary
darkening (hyperpigmentation) or lightening (hypopigmentation)
of the skin |
|
Pigmented Lesions: |
|
- |
Risk
of scarring |
|
- |
Temporary
darkening or lightening of the skin |
|
Tattoos: |
|
- |
Temporary
whitening of skin |
|
- |
Temporary
mild crusting or scaling |
|
- |
Risk
of scarring |
|
- |
Risk
of blistering |
Progress in laser treatment
of skin conditions is largely related to control of side effects
as well as pursuit of overall effectiveness. The most recent developments
in lasers and technique significantly reduce the risk of certain
side effects, while offering more satisfactory results. Expectations
for your specific condition, based on the laser being used, should
be discussed with your doctor before treatment.
