Carbon dioxide has more uses than most people realize.

Food Processing

  • chilling and freezing meats
  • freezing fresh vegetables
  • beverage carbonation

Industrial

  • welding and instrument gases
  • provide metal heat treating
  • rubber de-flashing
  • purging of vessels in industrial and chemical plants
  • special effects in the entertainment industry
  • dry ice

Health & Safety

  • medical uses
  • fire extinguishers
  • fire deluge systems
  • fumigation of grain silos

Carbon Dioxide is generated in many chemical processes and many times is simply released into the atmosphere as a waste by-product. Some sources of Carbon Dioxide are:

  • the fermentation process in the production of alcohol
  • the production of ammonia
  • hydrogen production
  • naturally occurs in vast quantities within the earth where it is gathered from wells in the same way as natural gas.

One source of carbon dioxide in Augusta is the ammonia process at PCS Nitrogen. Generally, carbon dioxide contains some impurities such as water, argon, nitrogen or hydrogen, which is removed in the process. The carbon dioxide is condensed into a liquid at a relatively high pressure and low temperature. The carbon dioxide gas from the PCS Nitrogen source is compressed to approximately 280 pounds per square inch. Water is removed by cooling the gas after each stage of compression in heat exchanges using either water or ammonia refrigeration. As the gas is cooled, the water in the gas stream condenses and falls out of the gas into the vessel.

Any odor is removed from the gas stream by passing through a bed of activated carbon. Any remaining moisture is removed in a desiccant bed. The carbon dioxide gas is then condensed to a liquid at –28 °F by the using liquid ammonia at 0 psig. The final purification step before going to storage is done by “boiling” the carbon dioxide liquid at about 0 °F. This removes any remaining non-condensable gases such as argon, hydrogen or nitrogen. The liquid carbon dioxide is again sub-cooled to –28 °F by the use of liquid ammonia and pumped to storage.

The MVE Carbo-Mizer
This carbonation system is designed to meet all of your carbon dioxide gas needs. One tank will provide you with a continuous supply of carbon dioxide for single and multiple applications.
