The Theory of Multiple Intelligence
The Theory of Multiple Intelligence was created by Howard Gardner, a Harvard psychologist. Gardner believes there are at least seven different human intelligences and that people can be smart in many different ways. He describes the intelligences as follows:

Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence is the ability to think in words and use language to express ideas. Authors, poets, speakers, and newscasters are examples of people with this sort of intelligence.

Logical/Mathematical Intelligence is the ability to calculate, measure, use logic and solve math and science problems. Scientists, mathematicians, accountants, and detectives are usually skilled in this intelligence.

Body/Kinesthetic Intelligence is the ability to use bodies and hands with great skill. Dancers, athletes, surgeons, jugglers, and craftspeople use this intelligence in their work.

Visual/Spatial Intelligence is the ability to think in pictures and to see and create images of designs with shape, color and size. Painters, architects, sculptors, sailors, and pilots exhibit this intelligence.

Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence
is the ability to hear and use pitch, rhythm and tone. Singers, musicians, composers, and sound technicians demonstrate this intelligence.

Interpersonal Intelligence is the ability to understand and interact with other people in a variety of ways. Teachers, coaches, ministers, actors, social workers, and politicians all use this intelligence.

Intrapersonal Intelligence
is the ability to understand your feelings and who you are in the world. Philosophers, psychologists, and playwrights use this intelligence.

Everyone possesses all seven intelligences however, some of us use more of one, others use more of another. The intelligence develop at different rates and the level at which the intelligence develop is subject to environmental factors
as well as genetics. The best news is that any of the intelligence can be further developed through practice and effort.
The important thing to remember is that everyone has different abilities and learns and thinks in unique ways. At PATHWAYS, we are working to establish an environment where students have opportunities to learn in all seven ways so that each person can use his/her intelligence strengths some of the time, while growing in areas that are more challenging at other times. Students will not only learn through reading, writing and math, but also through music, art building, moving, interacting with each other, thinking, and reflecting. Our goal is to teach life skills and to instill in PATHWAYS students a love for learning.
