WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

HypnosisHypnosis can promote dramatic positive changes in thinking, feeling, and behavior much more rapidly than other therapeutic procedures, in that it teaches you how to use the power of your own mind in your best interests. Hypnosis is a state of inner absorption, concentration and focused attention. This altered state of consciousness is like using a magnifying glass in the sun; when the rays of the sun are focused they are more powerful. Similarly, when our mind is concentrated and focused, we are able to use more of our potential and more of the power of our mind. In this sense, learning hypnosis is the ultimate in a self-control skill, rather than being out of control.

Many people fear that hypnosis will result in a loss of control, surrender of will, and being dominated. However, in hypnosis, you are not being controlled. All hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis. Hypnosis is something that you are doing, and the therapist just helps the process.

Another myth about hypnosis is that you lose consciousness and have amnesia. The majority of people, however, remember everything that occurs in hypnosis. This is acceptable because the vast majority of what we want to accomplish in hypnosis may be done in a medium trance depth, when one tends to remember everything.

Many people wonder about their ability to be hypnotized. Hypnosis is a learning process; any person can cooperate in developing a trance state that is useful for making changes. Self-hypnosis is used to work on goals between sessions.
