Sydney
Carter, who came to the area as organizer and first executive director
of the Augusta-Richmond County Planning Commission, resigned to create his
own firm in 1956. While maintaining his practice in Augusta, he founded
the firm Carter, Horan & Chapin, Architect, Planning Consultant and Landscape
Architect in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Between 1959 and 1964, Carter, Horan
& Chapin developed a Master Plan for Louisiana State University and participated
in projects which included the Louisiana Governor's Mansion, and the Louisiana
State Recreational Plan. The firm was sold to Continental Engineers of Birmingham
in 1964.
Sydney
Carter has influenced
the architecture and urban development of many municipalities in Georgia
and the Southeast for more than four decades. Present and former clients
include federal, state and city-county agencies, as well as commercial
and private entities. With 43 years of continuous operation under the
same name, Sydney Carter, P.C. has become synonymous with integrity and
professional excellence in architectural design and urban planning.
EXPERIENCE
With
over 50 years of architectural and planning experience, Sydney Carter
has completed and expedited adoption of master plans for over 200 cities
and counties. He has designed more than 100 churches and numerous medical
facilities, commercial and industrial buildings and residences. A former
professor of city and regional planning at Clemson University, Sydney
Carter has served on the faculties of the University of Florida, Florida
Atlantic University, Paine College and the Federal University of Pernambucco,
Brazil.

A graduate
of Syracuse University School of Architecture, Harvard University's Graduate
School of Design and Kennedy School of Government, Sydney Carter is a
Registered Architect in Georgia, South Carolina, Florida and New York.

Sydney
Carter is a member of the American Institute of Architects, American Institute
of Certified Planners, the American Planning Association and the Central
Savannah River Area (Richmond and Columbia Counties Georgia and Aiken
County South Carolina) Planners Group.
