A clock not
only tells time . . . it also bonds us to special memories.
|
In our business, we watch our customers shop in our stores. In their
faces you can see how they respond to a certain clock. Sometimes we
hear, "Oh! This one is just like my grandmother's!" or, "My dad
had one similar to this." Our clocks ignite old memories of loved
ones. They seem to somehow hold us to a loving bond we have created
in time with a special person. Therefore, we have decided to devote this page to a story of time. We hear
loving stories almost every day that include a special clock, and
we felt that it would be a lovely idea to share our favorite story
of the month with all of our loving customers. So, bookmark us and
stop back by monthly, or come in and tell us your story. You never
know, your story may end up here for others to enjoy. |
Story of the
Month
One of our customers gave this to us as a photograph
which we keep in our store.
Do you know . . .
how the Grandfather Clock got its name? The history of timekeeping
is almost as old as humankind. Early man estimated the time by visually
tracking the position of the sun. Later, sundials were designed
to measure changes. Even as late as the 19th century, they served
as a guide to setting inaccurate clocks of the day. Time measured
by sundial varies with the rotation of the
earth, so an adjusting chart was provided that compensated accordingly.
An accurate mechanical clock needs a power source like water, weights,
or springs, and a mechanism that transforms the power into mechanical
movement at a constant rate. The incorporation of a pendulum made
clocks much more accurate and widely available. Around 1665, clockmakers
began enclosing the weights and pendulums in hollow wooden columns,
which became known as coffin clocks for obvious reasons. But it
wasn't until 1876 that they were named after a popular song called
"My Grandfather's Clock," and tall clocks have been known by that
name ever since. |
